Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive

(formerly Co-Biome MetaXplore GI Plus)

Best microbiome gut test in Australia interpreted with Essencia Wellbeing

Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive delivers next-generation gut microbiome and gastrointestinal health analysis.

It combines whole-genome metagenomic sequencing with GI marker analysis to reveal microbial community balance, gut function, and inflammation for truly personalised gut care. It measures bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and archaea while also exploring functional pathways such as butyrate production, methane, histamine, vitamin synthesis, and toxin metabolism. Biomarkers like calprotectin, zonulin, secretory IgA, lactoferrin, and pancreatic elastase give additional insight into inflammation, barrier integrity, and digestive function.

What it Measures:

Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive assesses three key layers of gut health: the microbiome ecosystem, its functional capacity, and gastrointestinal integrity.

Microbiome mapping (metagenomic sequencing)

  • Species‑level analysis of a very broad range of bacterial, archaeal and fungal species in the gut.

  • Microbial diversity and richness indices – important markers for long‑term gut and systemic health.

  • Relative abundance of beneficial, commensal and potentially problematic organisms.

Functional microbiome markers

  • Short‑chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, including butyrate – important for gut lining nourishment and anti‑inflammatory effects.

  • Potential for production of inflammatory compounds such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS).

  • Microbes associated with histamine, methane and hydrogen sulphide, which may contribute to bloating, IBS‑type symptoms or intolerance patterns.

  • Vitamin and metabolite production potential, mucin‑degrading species, oral‑derived species and other functions that influence barrier integrity, immunity and systemic health.

GI health & host markers*

  • Calprotectin – intestinal inflammation.

  • Faecal occult blood (FOB) – occult bleeding in the gut.

  • Lactoferrin – neutrophil‑associated inflammation.

  • Pancreatic elastase – digestive enzyme output from the pancreas.

  • Secretory IgA (sIgA) – gut mucosal immune activity.

  • Zonulin – a marker associated with intestinal barrier integrity (“leaky gut”).

* Markers may vary slightly depending on configuration.

Pathogen and overgrowth screening

Targeted molecular panels for key bacterial pathogens and protist parasites, so important infections are not missed while still capturing the broader microbiome picture.

Your Gut Function Testing Questions Answered

  • Which gut test is best for my symptoms?

There is no "one size fits all" in gut health. The best test for you depends on your symptom history, previous medical investigations, and health goals. During your consultation, we evaluate three primary pathways:

For Comprehensive Mapping: The Microbiome Explorer uses advanced metagenomic sequencing to provide the broadest view of your microbial ecosystem, diversity, and functional potential. It is ideal for chronic digestive issues, metabolic health, and general wellness.

For Acute or Inflammatory Symptoms: If we suspect underlying infections or inflammatory conditions, the GI360 is excellent. It combines molecular (PCR) technology with traditional culture methods to identify pathogens and measure key markers of digestion and inflammation.

Systemic Concerns: For skin flares, unexplained fatigue, or joint pain, we may recommend a Gut Barrier Panel to specifically assesses markers of intestinal permeability and actual damage to the gut lining.

“My goal is to ensure you aren't over-testing, but rather choosing the most targeted investigation to provide the answers you need.” – Catrina Bleicher, Naturopath (BHSc), Essencia Wellbeing.

  • Can I do more than one gut test, and in what order?

Sometimes its useful "layer" tests to get a complete picture of your digestive health, but we always aim to be strategic to ensure the best value for your investment. The order is determined by your "clinical priority":

The Foundational Layer: We may start with a comprehensive stool test (like Microbiome Explorer or GI360). This provides the broadest data on your microbial balance, inflammation, and digestive function, which often resolves the majority of symptoms.

The Targeted Layer: If your symptoms specifically involve rapid bloating after eating or restless leg syndrome, we may suggest a SIBO Breath Test alongside or after your stool test. SIBO occurs in the small intestine, an area stool tests cannot fully "see."

The Systemic Layer: If we identify signs of immune activation or if you have an autoimmune condition, we may add a Gut Barrier Panel. This is often done simultaneously with a stool test or as a follow-up to measure the "leaky gut" response to identified dysbiosis.

“By prioritising the test most likely to reveal the "root cause" first, I can often create an effective treatment plan without the need for immediate multiple testing.” – Catrina Bleicher, Naturopath (BHSc), Essencia Wellbeing.

  • How soon after testing will I have a treatment plan?

Once your results are back (typically less than 4 weeks depending on the test), we book a dedicated review consultation to go through the findings and translate them into a practical plan. During that session, you’ll receive prioritised recommendations for diet, lifestyle, and targeted supplements tailored to your unique gut profile.

“We also don’t need to wait for test results before we start implementing changes. There is always low hanging fruit based on your lifestyle and symptom picture that we can start to make headway, and these changes may already begin to make a difference in the lead up to getting more specific in tailoring our plan to your test results.” – Catrina Bleicher, Naturopath (BHSc), Essencia Wellbeing.

  • Do I need a consultation before I can do a gut test?

Gut tests are generally arranged as part of a full naturopathic consultation so we can match the right test to your history, symptoms, medications and goals.

The consultation allows us to start to make changes immediately and also ensures that when your results do come back, we focus on translating them into a clear, personalised plan, that considers your individual situation and needs.

If you’re not sure where to start, book into a free discovery call.

  • Are gut tests suitable if I’m already under the care of a gastroenterologist?

Yes. Many people come for gut testing after standard scopes and hospital-based tests either come back “normal” or don’t fully explain their symptoms. These tests don’t replace medical investigations, but they can complement them by exploring microbiome balance, digestion and gut barrier function at a deeper level.

Relevant findings can be shared with your gastroenterologist or GP if we agree this will contribute to a better treatment outcome for you.

  • How much do gut tests cost, and are they covered by private health?

Gut test fees vary depending on the specific test, the laboratory (Australian vs international), and whether multiple panels are combined.

While private health insurers are gradually reinstating rebates for naturopathic consultations, rebates typically apply to the consult portion rather than the lab fee itself. We can discuss cost ranges and stage testing if needed during your appointment.

  • Why would I consider functional gut testing if my standard tests were “normal”?

Standard medical investigations (like blood tests, ultrasounds, or colonoscopies) are essential for screening for structural disease, such as polyps, cancer, or severe autoimmune inflammation. When these come back "normal," it is often good news. It means the architecture of your gut is healthy.

However, you can have a "normal" structure but sub-optimal function. Functional gut testing is designed to explore the "why" behind persistent symptoms by zooming in on:

Microbiome Diversity & Balance: Identifying subtle dysbiosis or an overgrowth of bacteria, yeast, or parasites that standard screens often miss.

Digestive Capacity: Measuring how well you are actually breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates via pancreatic enzyme markers.

Early Barrier & Immune Changes: Detecting markers of intestinal permeability ("leaky gut") or low-grade immune activation (Secretory IgA) before they progress into a diagnosable disease.

Functional Ranges: While medical tests use broad "reference ranges" to detect pathology, we look for "optimal ranges" to identify where your systems might be struggling even before a disease state is reached.

By combining these insights, we can move past a "diagnosis of exclusion" and create a precise, evidence-based plan to restore your digestive wellbeing.

  • How do I know if my gut might be contributing to my symptoms?

Because the gut is the "command centre" for your immune system, hormone metabolism, and neurotransmitter production, imbalances rarely stay confined to the digestive tract. You might consider your gut as a primary driver if you experience:

Persistent Digestive Shifts: Chronic bloating, reflux, or IBS-type symptoms that don't resolve with standard dietary changes.

Systemic "Red Flags": Unexplained fatigue, "brain fog," or skin flares (like acne or eczema) that seem to flare alongside your digestion.

Immune & Mood Connections: New food sensitivities, seasonal allergies, or heightened anxiety and low mood.

The "Plateau" Effect: If you have made healthy lifestyle shifts but your progress has stalled, it often indicates an underlying microbiome imbalance or digestive insufficiency that needs a targeted approach.

“If you are experiencing a cluster of these symptoms simultaneously, it is a strong signal that exploring your gut health could provide the "missing piece" of your health puzzle.” – Catrina Bleicher, Naturopath (BHSc), Essencia Wellbeing.

  • Do functional gut tests diagnose IBS, IBD, coeliac disease or cancer?

No. Functional gut tests provide a detailed map of your microbiome and gut function rather than a formal medical diagnosis. However, they are powerful screening tools. Our comprehensive tests (such as GI360 and Microbiome Explorer) include key inflammatory markers like Faecal Calprotectin and Lactoferrin, which are clinically validated to help differentiate between IBS and IBD.

“While these tests cannot replace a colonoscopy or endoscopy, they identify patterns of dysbiosis, inflammation, immune dysregulation and intestinal permeability. This data helps us determine if you need a medical referral for further investigation and allows us to create a highly targeted naturopathic strategy to support your healing alongside your medical care.” – Catrina Bleicher, Naturopath (BHSc), Essencia Wellbeing.

  • How is a SIBO breath test different from a stool test?

SIBO breath testing is the most widely used method to assess small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), by measuring hydrogen and methane gases exhaled, after a carbohydrate drink. Stool tests, by contrast, mainly reflect large intestinal (bowel) microbes and digestion.

"If your main issues are upper bloating and discomfort soon after meals, jot down timing and triggers. This can help guide whether a SIBO breath test or a stool test is most suitable.” – Catrina Bleicher, Naturopath (BHSc), Essencia Wellbeing.

A full symptom picture, which we gather at your initial consultation will help us to determine which specific test or tests are right for you.
